The First Lamp On

There's a point in early autumn when the lamp goes on before dinner. That small shift changes a room more than any seasonal decoration. Corners become softer. Wood looks warmer. The sofa suddenly feels like somewhere to stay rather than somewhere to pass through. The best evening rooms rarely rely on one bright source. A lamp beside the sofa, a low glow across the room, perhaps a candle on the table. Pools of light, with a little darkness left between them. Autumn doesn't always need decorating. Sometimes it just needs the overhead light switched off.
